The Maremma, from Tuscany in Italy, is a unique breed. It is not a people dog, but a sheep dog in the true sense — its position in life is to protect its flock. The Maremma is more than happy to spend its life outside within the flock environment. It is in the dog's nature to bond and protect, but it is not aggressive.
